Almeria is in the south east corner of Spain on the Mediterranean coast. It is Europe’s warmest and driest region. The area around Mojacar and Garrucha now has four golf courses, a variety of restaurants offering a wide range of cuisine, an aqua park and supermarkets stocking goods for all nationalities but it still retains its “Spanishness”. The planners have allowed none of the high rise developments found on the Costa del Sol or the Costa Blanca.

The mountains provide dramatic scenery and there are miles of unspoilt and uncrowded beaches. There are now daily flights, often at bargain prices, from Birmingham into Almeria (My Travel Lite) as well as regular services from most U.K. airports.

Cortijo Grande

Cortijo Grande is a scenic valley in the Sierra Cabrera Mountains in Almeria province. It has stunning maintain views and a golf course set among orange, lemon and almond groves. It is 15 minutes from the sandy beaches of Majacar Playa. Although it is delightfully quiet there are two bar/restaurants in the valley, one with a large pool which is open to the public in season.

General Information About The Area

Turre (five minutes from Cortijo Grande fifteen from Bedar) has a good supermarket and a number of smaller shops including a chemist, bakers and a good selection of restaurants, some very reasonably priced.

Mojacar (10 minutes from Cortijo Grande, fifteen from Bedar) is a very picturesque Spanish hill town with winding streets, little gift and clothes shops, bars, cafes and a weekly market.

Mojacar Playa (fifteen minutes from Cortijo Grande, twenty from Bedar) offers miles of sandy beaches and lively bars, restaurants and discos (in the season).

Garrucha (15 minutes from both Cortijo Grande and Bedar) is a busy fishing port and marina. There are good beaches and lots of seafront fish restaurants. It also has the biggest street market locally (Friday mornings) and a good selection of shops and cafes.

Vera (20 minutes from Cortijo Grande, 10 from Bedar) is a typical Spanish town with a number of large supermarkets and a good variety of smaller shops and restaurants. It has a good street market on Saturday mornings and an ancient bull ring which has recently been restored.
